Georgia is not only a country of winemaking but of cheesemaking too. Only few know that the tradition of making cheese in this country is centuries old.
The history of cheese production in other countries dates four thousand years when in Georgia 8-thousand-year-old ware can be found which was used for cheese storing. It is impossible to say exact number of Georgian cheese varieties as many are lost or only preserved at local families but there are 14 varieties that are officially registered for the moment: Dambal`khacho, Chogi,Tenili,Kalti, Kobi,Chechili, Sulguni, Guda,Tushuri Guda, Georgian( factory) and Imeruli cheese. Tenili is included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
